“They said I would have to pay my dues.”
“They said to exercise an extreme amount of patience.”
“They told me that it wasn’t going to be easy.”
[The screen is still black.]
“They told me to temper my expectations.”
[Fade up.]
[The NAWC North American Championship belt sits folded on an oak desktop. The Canadian Commonwealth Championship sits neatly beside it. The camera pans up so we can match the voice to his face.]
[Oxford Osland.]
“If I let everybody else’s expectations deem what success looks like, I wouldn’t be sitting here before you as your champion. I wouldn’t be holding the only championship in today's wrestling landscape that matters.”
“For the past year, I’ve been breaking through glass ceilings on a regular basis. As each new challenge presented itself, I found a way to run through them.”
“Kenneth Marshall.”
“I took every ounce of Kenneth’s momentum from The House of Strong Style and made it my own. I took it from him, and I haven’t given it back.”
“Brinley Bishop.”
“My old training partner expected the two of us to ride up and down the road together as allies. I saw him for what he was, and that was a threat. I carried out the blindside, and diminished his efforts. I'm not sure he'll ever quite be the same man he once was.
“Aaron Vasquez.”
“All I had to do was toss ‘Chico’ a few racks, and he fell right in line. When Chico decided to expose our agreement to the masses while blackmailing his way into a title shot – I obliged him. I knew that I would find a way to defeat him – and that’s exactly what I did.
“Ralph Erickson.”
“The man with miles of potential – the only Canadian Commonwealth Champion to speak of. Well, that is until I snatched the championship from his grasp. Just another 'up and comer' that I had to put in their place.”
[Osland is all business.]
“For the past year, I’ve carried the North American Wrestling Council on my back. I brought prestige to a company that was building from the ground floor, and I did so by taking the torch that was never intended to be passed, and taking this company to new heights.
“You’re welcome.”
“The fact that there are over one hundred wrestlers under contract in various promotions in the NAWC is proof that my success has been feeding families across the globe. My hardwork has allowed one hundred men and women to build a life for themselves."
“You’re welcome.”
“The fact that we are headed into our 1st anniversary show on December 21st, which is taking place in London, England – is a testament to my drawing power and the prestige that I’ve brought to the The North American Championship.”
“You’re welcome.”
“That brings me to my opponent.”
[His voice trails off for a second. He takes a breath, and begins to speak.]
“Robbie Farside – another one of these rejects from the House of Strong Style. Apparently young Robbie has made quite the name for himself overseas, and is considered the next in line for a championship match. Well Robbie, take heed and speak to some of your peers. Ask them what it was like to step inside of the ring with a master of the mat. Ask them what it’s going to take to defeat the top draw in the NAWC.”
[…]
“It will bring me great pleasure to destroy you in-front of your fellow countrymen. On December 21st, my journey as North American Champion becomes that much more prestigious when I walk into enemy territory and walk out with the North American Championship around my waist.”
“The fact that this opportunity exists is why you’ll forever be indebted to me Robbie.”
“You’re welcome.”
